We haven’t posted a book review here before, but the book Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall made our “must read” list for the summer…uhm…end of summer…

Its a great story about the author’s journey into a remote area of Mexico called Copper Canyon inhabited by the Tarahumara Indians, who, for some strange reason, produce some of the most amazing (and unknown) ultra distance runners in the world. What caught my curiosity as a sports medicine doctor was that the Tarahumara Indians also have almost no incidence of heart disease, diabetes or cancer and continue their running lifestyle well into their 80′s!

The author uses the Tarahumara as a stark contrast to the number of “runners” in the U.S. and other “developed” countries that continue to suffer not only from a multitude of running-related injuries and attempts to answer the question if we aren’t all just “Born to Run”.
